Dumbbell Straight Arm Hyperextension

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Straight Arm Hyperextension.

MediumLower back

About this exercise

This version of the dumbbell hyperextension is performed on a hyperextension bench with the dumbbell held in a different position — typically across the chest or held with both hands — compared to the standard variant. It strengthens the lower back erectors, glutes, and hamstrings through a controlled spinal extension movement.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the hyperextension bench so that the hip pad sits just below your hip crests and your upper body can hang freely
  • Hook your feet under the ankle pads and hold a dumbbell firmly across your chest or with both hands
  • Start with your torso bent forward at the hips, spine neutral, and allow a slight natural flex in your lower back
  • Contract your glutes and erectors to raise your torso until it is in line with your legs — do not hyperextend beyond neutral
  • Hold the top position for a moment, squeezing the glutes and lower back
  • Lower your torso slowly back to the starting position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Dumbbell Straight Arm Hyperextension

The Dumbbell Straight Arm Hyperextension is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
