About this exercise

The dumbbell standing triceps extension is an overhead isolation exercise that targets all three heads of the triceps, with particular emphasis on the long head. A single dumbbell is held with both hands and raised overhead, then lowered behind the head by bending the elbows. Standing requires core stability to maintain an upright posture throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold one dumbbell vertically with both hands cupped around the inner plate
  • Press the dumbbell directly overhead with arms fully extended and elbows pointing forward
  • Brace your core and keep your upper arms close to your head and stationary throughout
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head by bending the elbows until your forearms are roughly parallel to the floor
  • Extend your elbows to press the dumbbell back overhead, squeezing the triceps at the top
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
