About this exercise

The dumbbell standing reverse curl uses a pronated (overhand) grip to shift emphasis from the biceps to the forearm extensors (brachioradialis and wrist extensors) while also working the biceps brachii. Standing with palms facing down throughout the lift is what makes this a "reverse" curl. It is an effective movement for building forearm strength and improving grip.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand with an overhand (pronated) grip and arms fully extended
  • Keep elbows close to your sides and your upper arms stationary throughout the movement
  • Curl both dumbbells upward toward your shoulders while maintaining the pronated grip
  • Squeeze the forearms and biceps at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbells back to the starting position in a slow, controlled manner
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
