About this exercise

A rear deltoid isolation exercise performed bent over where you raise dumbbells out to the sides. The prone (forward-bent) torso position shifts the emphasis from the side deltoids to the rear deltoids, making it an effective move for balanced shoulder development.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hinge forward at the hips until your torso is nearly parallel to the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand with a neutral grip, arms hanging straight toward the floor
  • Raise both arms out to the sides in a wide arc until they are parallel to the floor
  • Squeeze your rear deltoids at the top and hold briefly
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position under control
  • Keep a soft bend in your elbows and maintain a neutral spine throughout
