Dumbbell Standing Preacher Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Standing Preacher Curl.

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell standing preacher curl mimics the arm position of a preacher bench curl while standing, typically by bracing the upper arm against the inner thigh or a fixed surface. This isolates the biceps by preventing the elbow from swinging and keeping the upper arm stationary throughout the curl. It is performed one arm at a time.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in one hand with an underhand grip
  • Lean slightly forward and brace the back of your working upper arm firmly against your inner thigh to stabilize it
  • Keeping the upper arm stationary, curl the dumbbell upward toward your shoulder by contracting the biceps
  • Squeeze the biceps at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell in a slow, controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one arm before switching to the other
