About this exercise

The dumbbell standing palms-in press is a shoulder exercise performed with a neutral grip, meaning palms face each other throughout the movement. This grip reduces stress on the shoulder joints compared to a traditional overhand press while strongly engaging the front and side deltoids. Performing the movement standing adds a core stability demand.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing each other
  • Brace your core and keep your chest up with a slight natural arch in your lower back
  • Press both dumbbells straight overhead in a controlled manner, keeping palms facing inward throughout
  • Fully extend your arms at the top without locking out the elbows
  • Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height in a slow, controlled motion
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
