About this exercise

The dumbbell standing overhead press builds shoulder size and strength by pressing a pair of dumbbells from shoulder height to full arm extension overhead. Standing requires greater core and lower-body stability compared to the seated variant, making it a more demanding total-body stabilisation challenge.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward and elbows at roughly 90 degrees
  • Brace your core, keep your chest tall, and avoid arching your lower back
  • Press both dumbbells straight upward until your arms are fully extended overhead
  • At the top, the dumbbells should be directly above your shoulders with elbows locked out
  • Lower the dumbbells in a controlled arc back to shoulder height
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
