Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Standing One-Arm Curl (over Incline Bench).

MediumBiceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell standing one-arm curl over an incline bench uses the top edge of an incline bench as an arm support, keeping the upper arm at a slight forward angle to increase the stretch on the biceps at the bottom. This supported position isolates the biceps and reduces cheating through the lower back.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to an incline and stand behind it
  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand and rest the back of your upper arm over the top edge of the incline bench for support
  • Start with your arm fully extended and palm facing upward
  • Curl the dumbbell upward toward your shoulder in a controlled arc
  • Squeeze the biceps at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to full extension under control, then complete all reps before switching arms
