About this exercise

The Dumbbell Standing Driver is a shoulder exercise where you hold a dumbbell horizontally at arm's length and rotate it like a steering wheel, alternately raising each end. It targets the front and lateral deltoids through a unique circular arc that differs from standard raises.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding one dumbbell with both hands at chest height, gripping it at each end
  • Extend your arms forward so the dumbbell is level and roughly parallel to the floor
  • Rotate the dumbbell clockwise so one end rises and the other lowers, like turning a steering wheel
  • Continue rotating until one end points up and the other points down
  • Reverse the rotation back through center and continue to the other side
  • Keep your elbows slightly soft and your core braced throughout
  • Control the movement — avoid swinging or using momentum
