Dumbbell Standing Drag Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Standing Drag Curl.

MediumBicepsFront shoulders

About this exercise

The dumbbell drag curl is a bicep curl variation where the dumbbells are literally dragged up along the torso rather than swung out in an arc. Keeping the elbows behind the body throughout the lift maximises tension on the biceps and reduces front-deltoid involvement compared to a standard curl.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a supinated (underhand) grip
  • Keep your back straight and core braced
  • Begin the curl by driving your elbows backward and upward, dragging the dumbbells up along your body
  • Keep the dumbbells in contact with (or very close to) your torso as they rise
  • Continue until the dumbbells reach upper-chest level and elbows are behind you
  • Squeeze the biceps at the top, then reverse the path slowly back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
