About this exercise

The dumbbell standing close-grip shoulder press is a standing overhead press variation where the dumbbells are held close together throughout the movement, increasing the emphasis on the front deltoids and upper chest while also demanding greater core stability. The narrow grip path creates a slightly different stimulus compared to a standard shoulder press.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height
  • Position the dumbbells close together with palms facing forward or slightly inward
  • Brace your core and keep your back straight
  • Press both dumbbells overhead in a close, controlled path, keeping them nearly touching
  • Fully extend your arms at the top without locking out the elbows
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
