About this exercise

The standing dumbbell calf raise builds size and strength in the calves by driving up onto the balls of your feet against added resistance.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, feet hip-width apart
  • For a greater range of motion, place the balls of your feet on a raised surface with your heels hanging off
  • Push through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Squeeze your calves at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower your heels back down until you feel a stretch
  • Repeat with control
