About this exercise

A standing dumbbell shoulder press popularised by Arnold Schwarzenegger that adds a forearm rotation at the bottom — starting with palms facing you and rotating to palms forward as the arms extend — recruiting the front, side, and rear deltoids across a wider range of motion than a standard press.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing toward you and elbows in front of the body
  • Brace your core and keep a slight knee bend throughout
  • Press the dumbbells upward while simultaneously rotating the wrists outward so that palms face forward at the top
  • Fully extend the arms at the top without locking the elbows
  • Reverse the movement on the way down, rotating the palms back toward you as the dumbbells descend to shoulder height
  • Keep the motion smooth and controlled throughout
