About this exercise

A full-body compound exercise that combines a squat with a lateral ("iron cross") raise. Holding a dumbbell in each hand, you squat down with the dumbbells together in front of you, then drive back up to standing while raising both arms out to the sides to shoulder height, forming a cross. The squat loads the quadriceps and glutes while the raise works the deltoids, demanding whole-body coordination and stability.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand
  • Bring the dumbbells together in front of you and brace your core
  • Squat down by bending your hips and knees, keeping your chest up and the dumbbells in front
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up, and as you rise raise both arms out to the sides until they reach shoulder height, forming a cross
  • Pause briefly at the top with control
  • Lower the dumbbells back together in front as you descend into the next squat
