About this exercise

The dumbbell squat to overhead press is a full-body compound exercise that combines a squat with an overhead press in one fluid movement. It simultaneously challenges the quadriceps, glutes, shoulders, and triceps while demanding core stability throughout, making it highly efficient for both strength and conditioning.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing in
  • Brace your core and lower into a squat by pushing your hips back and bending your knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your heels to stand up explosively
  • As you reach the top of the squat, use the momentum to help press both dumbbells straight overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Pause briefly with arms locked out overhead
  • Lower the dumbbells with control back to shoulder height as you begin the next squat
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
