About this exercise

The dumbbell split stance single arm overhead press develops unilateral shoulder strength while demanding core anti-rotation stability. The staggered foot position lowers the center of gravity and reduces the tendency to lean sideways during the press.

How to Perform

  • Stand in a split stance with one foot forward and one foot back, holding a dumbbell at shoulder height in one hand with your palm facing forward
  • Brace your core and keep your torso upright
  • Press the dumbbell straight overhead until your arm is fully extended without locking the elbow aggressively
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the dumbbell back to shoulder height with control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching the dumbbell to the other hand and switching your foot position
