Dumbbell Split Stance Bent Over Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Split Stance Bent Over Row.

MediumMiddle back

About this exercise

A bent-over dumbbell row performed with a staggered foot position — one foot forward, one back — that provides a stable base while keeping the torso parallel to the floor. The split stance minimises lower-back strain and allows a strong hip hinge without the need for a bench or extra support.

How to Perform

  • Stand with one foot roughly 30–40 cm in front of the other in a staggered stance, knees slightly bent
  • Hinge forward at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, keeping a neutral spine
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand with arms hanging straight down, palms facing each other
  • Brace your core and retract the shoulder blades slightly to engage the back
  • Row both dumbbells up toward your hips simultaneously, driving the elbows back and squeezing the lats at the top
  • Lower the dumbbells under control back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps, then switch the foot position and repeat
