About this exercise

The dumbbell split squat with the front foot elevated places the lead foot on a raised surface while holding dumbbells at your sides, amplifying the range of motion and increasing the load on the quadriceps and glutes. It builds unilateral leg strength and muscular balance.

How to Perform

  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and place your front foot on a step or low platform
  • Step your rear foot back into a staggered split stance with your torso upright
  • Lower your rear knee toward the floor by bending both knees until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the ground
  • Keep your front knee tracking over your toes throughout the movement
  • Drive through your front heel to press back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
