About this exercise

The dumbbell split squat is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed in a staggered stance with a dumbbell held in each hand. It develops strength and balance in the quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings while exposing and correcting asymmetries between legs.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet hip-width apart, then step one foot forward and the other back into a staggered stance
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip
  • Keep your torso upright and core braced
  • Lower your rear knee toward the floor by bending both knees, keeping the front knee tracking over your toes
  • Descend until your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through your front heel to stand back up to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
