About this exercise

The dumbbell sitting leg extension is a classic quadriceps isolation exercise performed on a bench, where a single dumbbell is gripped between the feet and lifted by extending the knees. It replicates the movement of a leg extension machine using only a dumbbell, making it accessible when machines are unavailable.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the edge of a bench and hold a dumbbell vertically between your feet, squeezing it securely
  • Place your hands on the bench beside your hips for support and lean back slightly
  • Straighten your legs by extending at the knees until both legs are fully extended and parallel to the floor
  • Squeeze the quadriceps at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell back down by bending the knees to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
