About this exercise

The dumbbell sit-up to press combines an abdominal sit-up with an overhead press, training the abs and shoulders in a single fluid movement. As you rise to the top of the sit-up, you press the dumbbells overhead, making the exercise dynamic and functional.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor, and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing forward
  • Brace your core and perform a sit-up by curling your torso up toward your thighs
  • As you reach the upright position, press both dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height as you slowly descend back to the starting position
  • Keep the movement controlled throughout; avoid using momentum to throw yourself up
