About this exercise

The dumbbell single leg step up is a unilateral lower-body exercise where you step onto an elevated surface with one leg while holding dumbbells at your sides. It develops quad and glute strength, improves single-leg stability, and helps correct left-to-right strength imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a sturdy step or box, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Place one foot fully on the step, keeping the other foot on the floor
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to step up until both legs are extended on top of the step
  • Slowly lower the trailing leg back to the floor under control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other leg
