HardQuadriceps

About this exercise

A pistol squat variation where a dumbbell is held out in front for counterbalance while one hand lightly grips a support, making the demanding single-leg squat accessible to those still developing the balance and strength required for a freestanding pistol.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one leg in front of a pole, rack, or door frame that you can lightly hold for balance
  • Hold a dumbbell in the hand opposite to the support, extending it forward at chest height for counterbalance
  • Extend the free leg straight out in front of you off the floor
  • Slowly squat down on the standing leg, keeping the heel flat and the chest tall
  • Descend as deep as possible — ideally until the hamstring touches the calf
  • Press through the heel to drive back up to standing
  • Complete all reps on one leg, then switch sides
