About this exercise

A highly technical unilateral squat performed on one leg while holding a dumbbell for counterbalance or added resistance. The movement demands exceptional leg strength, balance, and hip flexibility, making it one of the most challenging lower-body exercises.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in both hands at chest height or in one hand extended forward for counterbalance
  • Shift your weight onto one foot and extend the opposite leg straight out in front of you
  • Brace your core and begin to lower your hips by bending the supporting knee
  • Descend as deep as possible while keeping the extended leg off the floor and your torso as upright as you can
  • Drive through the heel of your supporting foot to stand back up to the starting position
