About this exercise

The dumbbell single leg split squat with ring is an advanced unilateral leg exercise where the rear foot is suspended in a gymnastic ring while holding dumbbells. The unstable ring surface adds a significant balance challenge on top of the strength demands, making it an effective tool for building quad and glute strength alongside hip and ankle stability.

How to Perform

  • Set a gymnastic ring at approximately knee height and stand a lunge-length in front of it
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides and carefully place the top of your rear foot into the ring
  • Stand tall, brace your core, and lower your hips straight down under control
  • Descend until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor or your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Push through the heel of your front foot to return to the starting position
  • Keep the ring as stable as possible by controlling the movement of your rear foot
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
