About this exercise

The dumbbell single arm reverse fly with rack support isolates the rear deltoid and upper back by having you brace your free hand against a squat rack for stability. The support removes unwanted torso movement so each repetition places maximum tension on the posterior shoulder and rhomboids.

How to Perform

  • Stand beside a squat rack and hold a dumbbell in one hand
  • Place your free hand on the rack at about hip height for support, hinge forward at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Let the dumbbell hang directly below your shoulder with a slight bend in the elbow
  • Raise the dumbbell out to the side in a wide arc, leading with the elbow, until your arm is parallel to the floor
  • Squeeze the rear deltoid at the top and pause briefly
  • Lower the dumbbell with control back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching arms
