About this exercise

A unilateral dumbbell front raise with a neutral (hammer) grip that targets the anterior deltoid while minimising upper-trap involvement. Performing one arm at a time allows you to focus on shoulder mechanics and address any strength imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand with a neutral grip (thumb pointing forward), arm hanging at your side
  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, slight bend in the knees, and core braced
  • Keep the non-working arm at your side or rest it on your hip for stability
  • Raise the dumbbell straight forward to shoulder height, keeping the thumb up and elbow slightly bent
  • Pause at the top, then slowly lower the weight back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm
