About this exercise

A unilateral pulling movement that targets the latissimus dorsi and upper back by rowing a dumbbell from a hip-hinge position with one hand braced on a bench. The single-arm setup allows a greater range of motion and helps correct muscle imbalances between sides.

How to Perform

  • Place one hand and the same-side knee on a flat bench for support, with your back flat and parallel to the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in the opposite hand with your arm fully extended toward the floor
  • Pull the dumbbell up toward your hip by driving your elbow back and squeezing your lat at the top
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell in a controlled manner until your arm is fully extended
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch to the other
