About this exercise

A shoulder isolation exercise performed lying on your side, targeting the medial deltoid with reduced opportunity for body sway or momentum. The stable side-lying position eliminates compensations common in the standing version, maximizing lateral deltoid activation.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a flat surface or bench with your legs stacked
  • Hold a dumbbell in your top hand with your arm resting along the side of your body
  • Keep your elbow slightly bent and raise the dumbbell directly upward
  • Stop when your top arm reaches perpendicular to the floor
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position with control
  • Complete all reps, then switch sides
