About this exercise

A rotator cuff isolation exercise performed lying on your side on a bench, rotating the top arm outward against the resistance of a light dumbbell. This movement strengthens the infraspinatus and teres minor, which are critical for shoulder health and stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a flat bench with your hips and knees stacked
  • Hold a light dumbbell in your top hand with your elbow bent to 90 degrees and tucked against your side
  • Let the dumbbell hang toward the floor as your starting position
  • Keeping your elbow pinned to your side, rotate your forearm upward until it points toward the ceiling
  • Pause briefly at the top without letting your shoulder roll forward
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
