About this exercise

The Dumbbell Seated W Press is a shoulder pressing variation performed with dumbbells held in a wide, flared-elbow position that forms a W shape with the arms. This position emphasizes the lateral and anterior deltoids through a full overhead range of motion while reducing stress on the shoulder joint compared to a standard overhead press.

How to Perform

  • Sit on an adjustable bench set to upright, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height
  • Position your elbows wide and angled outward so your arms form a W shape when viewed from the front
  • Brace your core and keep your back flat against the bench pad
  • Press the dumbbells overhead while maintaining the wide elbow position, bringing them slightly toward each other at the top
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the dumbbells back to the W starting position with control
  • Keep your wrists stacked over your elbows throughout the movement
