About this exercise

The dumbbell seated triceps extension is an overhead isolation exercise performed with a single dumbbell held in both hands while seated. Raising the load overhead places the long head of the triceps in a fully stretched position, maximising muscle recruitment throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a bench with your back supported or sit at the end of a flat bench
  • Hold one dumbbell with both hands, cupping the top plate, and press it overhead until your arms are fully extended
  • Keep your elbows close to your head and pointing toward the ceiling
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell behind your head by bending at the elbows until you feel a deep triceps stretch
  • Press the dumbbell back to the starting position by extending your elbows, squeezing the triceps at the top
  • Avoid flaring the elbows outward during the movement
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
