About this exercise

The dumbbell seated side bend is an oblique isolation exercise performed in a seated position. Holding a dumbbell on one side and bending laterally loads the opposite oblique muscles through a controlled range of motion, strengthening the lateral core.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on the end of a bench or chair with feet flat on the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand with your arm fully extended at your side
  • Place your free hand behind your head or on your opposite thigh for support
  • Keeping your back straight, bend your torso slowly to the side holding the dumbbell, lowering it toward the floor
  • Return to an upright position by contracting the obliques on the same side
