About this exercise

The Dumbbell Seated External Rotation is a targeted shoulder rehabilitation and strengthening exercise that isolates the rotator cuff by rotating the forearm outward against light dumbbell resistance while seated. It builds shoulder joint stability and reduces injury risk.

How to Perform

  • Place your elbow on your knee (or at your side) with the elbow bent to 90 degrees
  • Start with your forearm pointing downward or across your body
  • Rotate your forearm upward and outward until it points toward the ceiling or is horizontal
  • Hold briefly at the top, feeling the contraction in the back of your shoulder
  • Slowly lower the dumbbell back to the starting position
