About this exercise

The dumbbell seated close-grip press is a shoulder exercise performed while seated, with both dumbbells held close together and pressed overhead. Keeping the dumbbells close shifts greater emphasis to the front deltoids and triceps compared to a wider-grip press. The seated position limits lower-body assistance and increases shoulder isolation.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a bench with back support and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height
  • Position the dumbbells close together with palms facing each other or slightly forward
  • Brace your core and press both dumbbells straight overhead, keeping them close together throughout the movement
  • Fully extend your arms at the top without locking the elbows
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
