About this exercise

The Dumbbell Seated Bent-Arm Lateral Raise is a shoulder isolation exercise performed seated, with the elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees, reducing the leverage and allowing greater focus on the medial deltoid. Performing it seated minimizes momentum from the lower body, making it a stricter variation of the standard lateral raise.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a bench or chair with a dumbbell in each hand, feet flat on the floor
  • Hold the dumbbells at your sides with elbows bent to about 90 degrees, palms facing inward
  • Keeping the elbows bent throughout, raise both arms out to the sides until your upper arms are parallel to the floor
  • Lead with the elbows and keep the wrists in line with the forearms
  • Pause at the top and feel the contraction in the side delts
  • Lower the dumbbells slowly back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
