About this exercise

A seated overhead press performed with dumbbells one arm at a time, alternating sides each rep. The seated position provides a stable base while the alternating pattern increases core demand and allows a greater range of motion per arm.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a bench with back support, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward
  • Press one dumbbell overhead until the arm is fully extended, keeping the other at shoulder level
  • Lower the pressed dumbbell back to shoulder height under control
  • Press the opposite dumbbell overhead in the same manner
  • Continue alternating arms for the target number of reps per side
  • Keep your torso upright and avoid arching the lower back
