Dumbbell Reverse Lunge from Deficit

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Reverse Lunge from Deficit.

MediumGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell reverse lunge from deficit is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed while standing on an elevated surface, which increases the range of motion compared to a standard reverse lunge. The greater depth challenges the quadriceps, glutes, and hip flexors through a larger stretch, promoting strength and muscle development. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and step backward off the platform into a deep lunge.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright on a step or raised platform holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Brace your core and shift your weight onto one foot
  • Step one foot backward off the platform and lower your rear knee toward the floor under control
  • Descend until your front thigh is at or below parallel and your rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to return to the standing position on the platform
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch legs
