About this exercise

The dumbbell push press is a compound overhead pressing exercise that uses a brief leg drive to help propel the dumbbells overhead. It targets the shoulder muscles and triceps while also demanding core stability and coordination, and it allows heavier loads than a strict overhead press.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing inward or forward
  • Slightly dip your knees into a quarter squat while keeping your torso upright
  • Explosively extend your legs and use the momentum to drive both dumbbells overhead
  • Fully extend your arms at the top with the dumbbells directly above your shoulders
  • Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height under control
  • Reset and repeat for the desired number of repetitions
