About this exercise

The dumbbell push jerk is an explosive, Olympic-lifting-derived movement that drives dumbbells from shoulder height to a full overhead lockout using a powerful leg drive and a brief re-bend of the knees to receive the load. It builds total-body power, shoulder strength, and coordination simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with palms facing inward
  • Dip your knees slightly (quarter squat) to load the legs
  • Explosively drive through your legs and hips to initiate upward momentum
  • As the dumbbells rise, press them overhead and dip slightly under by bending your knees to receive them at full arm extension
  • Lock out your elbows with arms fully extended overhead and feet flat on the floor
  • Stand tall to complete the rep, then lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height under control
