About this exercise

An isolation exercise performed lying face down that targets the rear deltoids through a swinging arc. With the chest supported on a bench or the floor and arms hanging freely, the dumbbells are swung outward and upward to strongly contract the posterior deltoids and upper back.

How to Perform

  • Set an adjustable bench to a low incline or use a flat bench; lie face down with your chest on the pad and feet on the floor
  • Hold a dumbbell in each hand with arms hanging straight down below the bench, palms facing each other
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbows throughout the movement
  • Swing both arms outward and upward in a wide arc, leading with your elbows
  • Squeeze your rear deltoids at the top of the movement
  • Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
