Dumbbell Preacher Curl

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Preacher Curl.

EasyBiceps

About this exercise

The dumbbell preacher curl is a highly effective biceps isolation exercise performed on a preacher (Scott) bench. The angled pad fully supports the upper arm and removes any swinging or cheating, forcing the biceps to work through the entire range of motion without assistance from the back or shoulders.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the preacher bench and rest one upper arm flat against the angled pad
  • Hold a dumbbell with a supinated (underhand) grip, palm facing up
  • Start with the arm nearly fully extended at the bottom of the movement
  • Curl the dumbbell upward toward the shoulder while keeping the upper arm pressed firmly into the pad
  • Squeeze the biceps at the top of the curl
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly and under control back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one arm before switching to the other
