About this exercise

The dumbbell plyo squat combines a weighted squat with an explosive jump, challenging the lower body musculature and the cardiovascular system simultaneously. Holding dumbbells at the sides adds resistance while the plyometric element develops power and athleticism in the quads, glutes, and hamstrings.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides
  • Brace your core and sit back into a squat until thighs are parallel to the floor
  • Drive explosively through the heels, extending the hips and knees to launch into a jump
  • Keep the dumbbells controlled and close to your body during the jump
  • Land softly with slightly bent knees to absorb impact
  • Immediately descend into the next squat and repeat for the desired reps
