About this exercise

The dumbbell preacher hammer curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed on a preacher (Scott) bench using a neutral grip, with the thumbs pointing upward throughout the movement. The preacher pad fully supports the upper arms and eliminates momentum, while the hammer grip shifts emphasis toward the brachialis and brachioradialis.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the preacher bench and rest one upper arm flat against the angled pad
  • Hold a dumbbell with a neutral (hammer) grip so your thumb points up
  • Start with the arm nearly fully extended at the bottom
  • Curl the dumbbell upward toward the shoulder while keeping the upper arm pressed into the pad
  • Squeeze the biceps and brachialis at the top of the movement
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the starting position and complete all reps before switching arms
