About this exercise

A weighted sit-up variation where you hold a dumbbell extended overhead while your legs rest on a bench, increasing the load and lever arm on the abdominals throughout the movement. Placing the legs on the bench reduces hip-flexor involvement and shifts the emphasis to the rectus abdominis.

How to Perform

  • Place a bench horizontally in front of you and lie on your back with your calves resting on top of it, knees bent at roughly 90 degrees
  • Hold a dumbbell with both hands and extend your arms overhead, keeping them straight throughout the movement
  • Brace your core and curl your torso upward, driving your arms toward the ceiling and then forward as you rise
  • Continue until your torso is upright and the dumbbell is positioned above your knees
  • Slowly reverse the motion, lowering your back to the floor with arms overhead
  • Repeat for the target number of repetitions
