About this exercise

The dumbbell one arm upright row targets the upper trapezius and lateral deltoid by pulling a single dumbbell vertically along the body to chin height. Training one side at a time allows a greater range of motion and helps address asymmetries in shoulder and trap development.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in one hand in front of your thigh, palm facing your body
  • Keep your torso still and pull the dumbbell upward along the front of your body
  • Lead with your elbow, driving it up and out to the side
  • Raise until the dumbbell reaches chin level and your elbow is above shoulder height
  • Pause briefly at the top
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the start position under control
  • Complete all reps before switching arms
