About this exercise

The dumbbell one arm triceps extension performed on a bench places the working arm in a stretched overhead position, maximizing the long head of the triceps through a full range of motion. Lying on the bench stabilizes the body so force is directed entirely to the triceps.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back on a flat bench, holding a dumbbell in one hand directly above your shoulder with the arm fully extended
  • Keep your upper arm vertical and stationary throughout the movement
  • Slowly bend the elbow, lowering the dumbbell toward the side of your head
  • Stop when the forearm is approximately parallel to the bench
  • Press the dumbbell back up by extending the elbow until the arm is fully straight
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
