About this exercise

The dumbbell single-arm starfish crunch is a beginner-friendly ab exercise performed lying on the floor with one arm holding a dumbbell extended overhead and the other arm out wide. The single-arm load creates an anti-rotation demand while targeting the rectus abdominis.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back and spread your arms and legs wide in a star position
  • Hold a dumbbell in one hand, extending that arm along the floor overhead
  • Exhale and crunch upward, lifting your upper body and the weighted arm off the floor
  • Bring the dumbbell toward your midsection at the top of the crunch
  • Lower yourself back down in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm
