About this exercise

The dumbbell one arm kickback isolates the triceps by hinging at the hip, keeping the upper arm parallel to the floor, and extending the forearm back against gravity. Working one arm at a time allows a full range of motion and helps correct strength imbalances between sides.

How to Perform

  • Place one hand and the same-side knee on a flat bench for support, holding a dumbbell in the opposite hand
  • Hinge forward until your torso is nearly parallel to the floor
  • Bend the working arm to 90 degrees with your upper arm pinned parallel to your torso
  • Extend the forearm back until the arm is fully straightened, squeezing the triceps
  • Pause briefly at full extension
  • Lower the dumbbell slowly back to the 90-degree start position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
