About this exercise

The dumbbell lying single extension is a unilateral triceps isolation exercise performed lying flat on a bench. Holding one dumbbell, you extend and lower it overhead in a controlled arc, targeting the long head of the triceps while the opposite arm rests or supports the working arm.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a horizontal bench holding a single dumbbell in one hand with a neutral or overhand grip
  • Extend the working arm straight up, perpendicular to the floor, as your starting position
  • Keep your upper arm stationary and bend your elbow to slowly lower the dumbbell toward your forehead or the side of your head
  • Pause at the bottom of the movement, feeling a stretch in the triceps
  • Press the dumbbell back up to the starting position by extending the elbow fully
  • Complete all reps on one arm before switching to the other
